What kinds of things now might be future collectibles? I heard phone cards may be future collectibles.?

It just doesn't work that way. The minute you start to collect something with an eye towards future value, it becomes not collectible because everyone else has the same idea. Collect because you love something.

It seems like very time you turn around some one some where is slapping the term "collectors" edition on something. Who knows any more things i have collected over ther years are not worth any more than what i paid for them. I think it's more for counsumers so they thing they will amek money from it in the future so the stores benefit from you buying it.
Reply:I don't collect them but phone cards have been a collectible for some years now. I see a few ads once in a while in Numismatic News the weekly coin paper. I bet there is a Yahoo group and I know there is a club. As to how big it will get depends on some one coming up and pushing the idea. Most collectibles end up as fads and that is the end of it. Stamps were nice one time until they just printed to many different kinds. Coins are doing okay as long as one sticks to the older coins and has a goal. A nice twentieth century type set can be put together today without going bankrupt and one can up grade it as money allows. That will be worth something in the future. All this nonsense on error coins has to go bust sooner or later. I have noticed more and more people are becoming aware that some medals and tokens are very scarce and people are paying very high for them. I was also amazed that a glass bead sold at auction for over $25,000. It was old and rare but that is a lot for a glass bead. Yes I must say 7,590,020 is also a lot for a twenty dollar gold piece. Some of the modern commemorative coins if one checks has a very low mintage so some one collecting these may do well also. That is my 2 cents worth, there has to be more opinions out there so give your 2 cents worth.
Reply:It's difficult to know for sure what will be collectible but here are some good guidelines.

If it's made to be collectible it probably won't be. The market determines what is valuable and it's usually NEVER special limited edition fads that are called collectible by the company that makes them.

If your in the US collect US items.

Good US Silver Coins

Hand made things that are very well crafted.

Things that there is more of a demand than there is a supply for, but not a fake demand.

All of the classic collectibles will always be collectible, old baseball cards, postcards, marbles, trains, matchbox and hotwheels.

Things that change and influence a generation.

True collectibles usually become collectible when the generation that had them as kids, can afford to buy them on the secondary market. In otherwords people collect their childhood items, but not all of them, just the ones that had a big impact.

If I had to take a Wild Guess today, I'd go w' Teletubbies, Tomas the Train, Power Rangers etc.

I've been selling collectibles for more than 25 years and these are some things I've found out.

If your interested, I run a free online antiques appraisal blog, check out the source box below.

The best way to find out what will be collectible is to find out what was in the past.
