I was thinking I was going to switch pre-paid phone companies.
Also if you have had other recommendations about other prepaid phone companies feel free to post.
Do you have to get a plan with Virgin Mobile or can you just use the prepaid phone cards?
You always have a "plan" with Virgin Mobile, but you can choose if it's per month or per minute. With per-month, you get a number of minutes for a fixed monthly fee (just like in a "regular" plan with Verizon or AT%26amp;T, but no annual contract). With per-minute, there is no fixed fee or fixed minutes, you just pay as you go.
The good thing is that since there is no contract, it's easy to switch from one plan to another, or just stop completely whenever you like. The downside with these plans is that you pay more for time than you would with "regular" plans. If you don't use the phone much or don't want to get locked into a contract, pre-paid is a better way to go.
The pre-paid cards are just a way to pay. You can also use a credit card, but it doesn't change the way you select your "plan." I looked around quite a bit to pick a company for my father who doesn't need the phone much, and I went with Virgin Mobile because I thought they had the lowest overall rate. They use the Sprint network, so ask around to see if Sprint works well in your area.
This link has a nice summary of many pre-paid companies: http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare....
