Changing sim cards from one cell phone to another?

I have a crappy old Cingular cell phone that I would like to take the sim card out of and put in another phone. I do not want to purchase a new plan, so I was looking at phones on ebay. Has anyone ever done this and have any advice on what I shoud/should not be looking for? Thanks!

Changing sim cards from one cell phone to another?
As long as you get another cingular phone it will be fine. Just take out your old card and put it in your new phone. It's no problem at all.
Reply:its ok man.... go change now
Reply:it didn't work for me but you should still try it.
Reply:I had the same problem, kinda. I bought my brother's pay as you go Cingular flip phone because I liked it better then my plan Cingular bar phone. It wouldn't work even though they were both from Cingular. I did some research on the net and found out that most phones have some sort of programming in them so that they can only be used for what they were intended and only by that company. Apparently the purpose of this was to make the phone company's more money. Every time you switch service you have to get a new phone instead of being able to use your old one. Someone figured out how to unlock them though. There are plenty of places on the net that will do it for a small fee. I think around 10 dollars or so. Make sure that you find a reputable place before sending them your phone. What would be easier though if you are lookin to get a new phone, would be to get one from ebay that has already been unlocked. Meaning that you can use it with whatever service contractor you would like. Just make

sure that the phone has all the features that you like. For instance if you get a plan from Cingular that has the new PTT, the walkie talkie type feature, included in the plan, unless the phone itself has that feature included in that model it will be useless to you. If you go to ebay and look up cell phones it will bring up a list and if you look at the bottom left hand side of the screen there should be alot of guides there written about what to look for when buying phones on ebay. Hope this helps
Reply:Oh this is an easy one, I have cingular as well and have gone through so many phones. Go ahead and purchase a new or used phone on E-bay-- make sure its one that your provider uses aka motorola and that it can take a sim card. Contact the seller of the phone you want and ASK questions. Its really easy to switch the sim card out though :)
Reply:I believe you have to get another cingular phone. Then you just pop the card out and put it into the new phone. I had nextel and did just that. It worked out fine.
