My bf is planning to buy a phone card to call his mother who lives overseas. I just wanted to know if he would get charged the airtime minutes and if so, would it be expensive?

Yes, airtime will be charged at normal deduction rates. No extra fees for calling use a cell phone. So it takes out of your normal daytime minutes or unlimited minutes if you have them depending on the time which you make the calls
